The Chinese University of Hong Kong started conducting research on Chinese Medicines in early 70's and has been the pioneer and leader in this field among the tertiary institutions in Hong Kong. For fostering a comprehensive development of Chinese medicines research, the University expanded the renowned Chinese Medicinal Material Research Centre (CMMRC) into the Institute of Chinese Medicine (ICM) in 2000.
ICM endeavours to conduct scientific researches to modernize, standardize, commercialize and internationalize Chinese medicines, in order to bring it to the international arena, as well as to benefit the patients at large.
Starting from 1 January 2026, the Li Dak Sum Yip Yio Chin R&D Centre for Chinese Medicine joined the Institute of Chinese Medicine at CUHK as a subsidiary research unit, further strengthening its research capabilities.
