It teaches physiology to medical, nursing and pharmacy students. The Department also offers a physiology course for students enrolled for a B. Sc. degree in Human Biology. Each year, more than 500 students are taught physiology by the academic staff of the Department.

The Department has active research activitics and equipped with state-of-the-art instruments for the study of physiology. Techniques that are available within the Department include molecular biology, cell culture facility, microfluorimetry with image analysis, electron microscopy and immunocytochemistry, HPLC, conventional and microgel analysis, patch-clamp, extracellular and intracellular electro-physiological techniques, radio-chemical analysis and microcirculation analysis.
