This design guidebook is being developed to introduce various indoor and outdoor heat mitigation strategies for urban planners, architects, developers, and other professionals in the building industry. It emphasizes the urgency for concrete improvements to the urban environment and highlights the health impacts of extremely hot weather, providing clarity on these important issues.

Graphic reminders of hot weather for the seniors

In view of the rising temperature due to climate change, the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) has studied the health impacts of extreme hot weather with universities and collaborating partners to strengthen the hot weather warning system. A "extremely hot" special alert will be issued when the HKO Headquarters or New Territories commonly reaches 35 degrees Celsius, to remind the public to be aware of the extremely high temperatures and to take precautionary measures.

The very hot weather warning has been in force for more than 120 hours and the highest temperature in urban area can reach 35 degree Celsius. It is predicted that hot weather will presist for these two weeks in Hong Kong. THe Hong Kong Observatory also mentioned that the heatwaves continues in the UK and the record-breaking temperature of 40.3 degree Celsius was record in Coningsby. The Met Office in the UK announced that at least 34 weather stations beat the 2019 record of 38.7 degrees, and warned that such extreme heat would occur every three years in the future if the high emission scenario presists.

Meta-analysis results show that both cold and hot temperatures increased the risk of mortality in all the countries/regions. The Vietnam Red Cross and the German Red Cross have been partnered to deveop an emergency action plan for urban heatwaves in Hanoi city, Da Nang and Hai Phong. They have conducted an extensive survey of target vulnerable populations. A new index forecast system has been developed for e three cities that early actions will be triggered when the forecast meet certain threshold, such as the opening of community cooling centres.
