Green Living
CU X RUBBISH
CU X RUBBISH was created to promote waste-less living on cam-
pus through a range of promotions and activities. ‘CU X RUB-
BISH’ means reducing CU’s waste by eliminating unnecessary
consumption and unnecessary waste and pursuing environmental
conservation principles in daily life. In the past, we had organ-
ised multiple recycling programmes after students had checked
out from their hostels, before distributing the recycled items
to new boarders as a way to encourage students to make good
use of CU’s community resources. At the moment, we are in dire
need of new members to continue promoting waste-less living in
CUHK.
Programmes in September: While new boarders are checking in
to their hostels, we will distribute items collected from last year,
including cleaning supplies, racks, kitchen utensils and more. We
will also visit CU’s dumpsters.

CU Green Buddies Programme
Bringing sustainability down to the personal level, the CU Green
Buddies Programme encourages students and staff to practice
environmental conservation principles in their everyday life. CU
students, teachers and staff can register to become a ‘CU Green
Buddy’ by promising to do the following six simple green acts in
their daily life:
1. When leaving a room, turn off electronics that are not in use
(lights, computers, air conditioners, etc.)
2. Choose to take the stairs if you need to go up one floor or
down two floors.
3. Try to avoid wasting food (for example, request to have less
rice).
4. Try to avoid using disposable containers and utensils (for ex-
ample, bring your own water bottle when attending an event
and bring your own lunchbox when buying takeaways).
5. Choose to walk instead of driving or taking the school bus if
you are not going to somewhere far.
6. Practice the principles of ‘3R’ (reduce, reuse and recycle).
As a ‘CU Green Buddy’, you can:
Support the culture of environmental conservation, develop
green habits and build a sustainable future!
Receive information and tips related to the green life on cam-
pus!
Participate in workshops and other activities through CU
Green Buddies Programme’s platform.
Encourage your friends to take part and bring upon even bigger
changes!

CUHK Local Society
Founded in 2013, the CUHK Local Society believes Hong Kong’s local interests should
be made a priority, and that democracy and autonomy should be the city’s goal. Aside
from monitoring the three committees of the CU Student Union, the Hong Kong Fed-
eration of Students and affairs within the university, the Society also concerns itself
with local social issues, such as new immigrants, the Individual Visit Scheme, the lan-
guage policy of using Putonghua as the medium of instruction in teaching Chinese,
and local history. The Society will also discuss various issues, such as Hong Kong’s
future, nation and sovereignty, and the impacts of Chinese politics and economy, from
the geopolitical, economic, social and cultural aspects. In addition to connecting with
other localist organisations outside the university, the Society is also considering to
form a localist cabinet to stand for the Student Union’s election, so as to effectively
put localist philosophy into practice.

CU Grassroot Concern Group
The Grassroot Concern Group is formed by a group of students who are concerned with grass-root and labour issues. The reason
why we are concerned is not just out of care or sympathy; we want to change the unfair system. We believe that ‘grass roots’ are not
simply defined by their incomes, but also by the fact that they are made the disadvantaged ones in the power relations. We strongly
oppose to explaining poverty and vulnerability with insufficient personal efforts; it is the same as how a lack of conscience in a capi-
talist employer cannot completely explain why he treats his employees badly. The root of the various problems we face now is at the
system. We organise book clubs and visits to communities in order to understand grass roots’ social causes and circumstances from
both theories and experience. We also publish a newsletter for workers, connecting with workers within the campus and educating
them on employees’ rights. Furthermore, we have established a cooperative to explore new models of production and consumption,
which would better grass roots’ conditions. Students are welcome to join the Concern Group or become a co-worker.
Upcoming programmes:
September: Grass Roots Workshop, community visits (outside the campus: guided tour in Sham Shui Po; within the campus: connect-
ing with workers), and film appreciation.
